Daily Life

Typically, social life in Greece is spent outside walking the streets, or along the shore of the islands. Cafes and coffee shops are an important part of Greek social life.

The main holidays in Greece are Easter and the Feast of Dormition (Assumption) of the Virgin which occurs in mid-August. For Easter people will return to their home villages and have traditional festivities. These festivities include the vigil in church, the lighting of the Holy Fire, and the roasting of whole lambs.

Food

Just like in most cultures, food is an important part of the Greek way of life. Traditional dishes vary across the country and some are known worldwide. It is important for meals to be shared with loved ones and for everyone to enjoy themselves.

Meals begin with appetizers known as mezedes. A common appetizer is Tzatziki (Ta-zee-key) which is Greek yogurt with chopped cucumber, garlic, and olive oil. It is usually eaten with bread, potatoes, or fried meatballs. Another common dish is the Greek salad or Horiatiki.

Next is the main dishes which are known for having lots of flavors. A famous Greek dish is Moussaka which is potatoes with eggplants, onions, minced beef, and bechamel creme. Lamb is very common in Greek dishes as well.
